Everything you need to know about Admissions GPS and finding your right-fit schools.

Understanding College Fit

More than 1 in 3 college students (38%) transfer at least once. That's not a coincidence. The college search process was built to sort students for institutions, not help students find the schools that fit them. Real fit means looking holistically across academic environment, campus culture, location, affordability, and the programs that will shape the next stage of a student's life. Admissions GPS was designed to make finding your fit much easier.

College fit means finding a school where everything aligns: the academic environment matches how you learn, the campus culture feels right, the location works for you, and the cost is realistic for your family. It's not about finding the best school on a list. It's about finding the best school for you, one where you'll genuinely thrive at this next stage of your education and life. Our guide walks through how to choose a college step by step.

College fit is more important than rankings, and the research backs it up. A white paper from Challenge Success, a nonprofit affiliated with Stanford's Graduate School of Education, found that college selectivity is not a reliable predictor of student learning, job satisfaction, or well-being. What matters more is engagement. Finding a school where you show up, get involved, and make the most of the experience. A top-ranked school where you're disengaged is a worse outcome than a lesser-known school where you thrive. Rankings measure prestige. Fit predicts outcomes.

Most college counselors recommend applying to 8 to 12 schools, with a balanced mix across reach, match, and likely categories. Your Fit 20 gives you 20 best-fit options across all three tiers to start from, so you can narrow down based on your priorities, deadlines, and budget with confidence. See our guide on how to choose a college for how to balance the list.

That's completely normal — and our platform is designed for it. The Fit Engine factors in curriculum flexibility, exploratory programs, and academic breadth so undecided students still get strong matches. You can also use our Major Mapper tool to explore options based on your interests and career goals.

About Admissions GPS

Admissions GPS is the college fit planning platform built on a simple idea: the right college is not always the highest-ranked one. It is the school where a student is most likely to belong and thrive. Founded in October 2025 by Mike Harp and based in Brooklyn, New York, Admissions GPS filters the 4,000 colleges into Your Fit 20, a personalized set of school recommendations for each student based on their priorities across five weighted factors: Admissions Odds, Program Strength, Affordability, Campus Culture, and Academic Outcomes. We source data from the Department of Education's College Scorecard, Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), and Common Data Sets published by individual schools, along with a range of other validated sources refreshed on an ongoing basis.

Admissions GPS was started by a dad trying to help his son find the right college. Using AI and data from federal sources like IPEDS and College Scorecard, he built a system that saved months of time. What began as a personal project evolved into a platform built to help every student find their best-fit schools.

The Fit 20 is your personalized list of 20 best-fit colleges built by our Fit Engine using 200+ data points matched to your profile. It includes a balanced mix of reach, match, and likely schools. And it's not meant to be one and done. Update your profile and continue to update your list as you learn more through family conversations, counselor meetings, and campus visits.

Your Fit Score is a personalized rating from 0 to 100 that measures how well a college matches you. It's not just about whether you can get in. It's about whether you're likely to thrive there. It's calculated across five factors, each weighted against your unique profile.

  • Admissions Odds: Your personalized probability of admission based on your academic profile.
  • Program Strength: How strong a school's programs are in your areas of interest.
  • Affordability: Your estimated net cost based on your family's income, relative to similar schools.
  • Campus Culture: How well a school's size, setting, and environment match your preferences.
  • Academic Outcomes: Based on graduation rates, selectivity, faculty resources, and research classification.

Your Fit Score is personal to you. Two students looking at the same school can see different scores based on their academics, intended major, family finances, and what matters most to them in a college experience.

The Fit Engine uses a five-factor algorithm that analyzes 200+ data points to generate a personalized fit score for every college in our database. The five factors are admissions odds, program strength, affordability, campus culture fit, and academic outcomes. Each factor is weighted against your unique profile to surface the schools where you are most likely to thrive, not just get in.

We source data from the Department of Education's College Scorecard, Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), and Common Data Sets published by individual schools, along with a range of other validated sources refreshed on an ongoing basis. Our data foundation is institutional and governmental, ensuring every recommendation is built on verified, regularly updated information.

How We Compare

ChatGPT is a general-purpose tool. It gives you a different answer based on whatever you ask it. Admissions GPS combines your unique profile with a curated database of colleges and a fit-based matching algorithm weighing 200+ factors to give personalized recommendations built around you. It's a structured planning system that guides you from first search through to final decision.

Legacy platforms make money selling your data to universities. We don't. Admissions GPS is built for families, not schools. We charge a transparent subscription fee and focus exclusively on helping you find right-fit colleges, matching you to schools based on 200+ factors and guiding you through every step of the planning process from initial search through to final decision.

Private college counselors average about $6,500 for comprehensive support, and top consultants charge far more. For less than the cost of a single hour with a private counselor, an annual Admissions GPS subscription covers your entire college planning journey, from building Your Fit 20 list through to your final decision.

Who It's For

Admissions GPS is designed for high school students in grades 9 through 12 and their families. Freshmen and sophomores can start exploring fit early. Juniors and seniors can use the full planning toolkit to build and finalize their list, track it in My Schools, and keep every deadline in the Master Calendar.

Admissions GPS is designed to be a resource for school counselors, not a replacement. When students arrive having already identified their priorities and an initial Fit 20 list, counselors can skip the discovery basics and apply their expertise where it matters most: refining the list, navigating applications, and supporting the student through decisions. Students get more from every counselor interaction, and counselors can support more families effectively. Focusing on fit from the start leads to better outcomes for everyone.

We currently focus on U.S. colleges for both domestic and international students. Support for international universities is on our roadmap. To signal your interest, reach out to us at hello@admissionsgps.com.
